Deutsche Bank turns over Trump documents after Mueller subpoena

Deutsche Bank had refused to show if Russia had put money into Donald Trump's accounts or not

Bloomberg News corrected Wednesday its bombshell report that special counsel Robert Mueller had subpoenaed Deutsche Bank records pertaining to President Donald Trump and his family.

The Wall Street Journal likewise initially reported, "Trump's Deutsche Bank Records Subpoenaed by Mueller", before updating its headline to, "Mueller Subpoenas Deutsche Bank Records Related to Trump".

Jay Sekulow, one of Trump's personal lawyers, said Deutsche Bank has not received any subpoena for financial records relating to the president as part of Mueller's probe. "No subpoena has been issued or received". United States investigators are demanding that it provide information on dealings linked to the Trumps, sources familiar with the matter told Handelsblatt. "No subpoena has been issued or received". Handelsblatt appears to be the originator of the subpoena story.

A spokesman for Mueller's office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources. The bank previously rejected those demands, saying sharing client data would be illegal unless it received a formal request to do so.

"Special prosecutor Robert Mueller zeroed in on President Donald Trump's business dealings with Deutsche Bank as his investigation into alleged Russian meddling in USA elections widens", read the lede. Trump aide George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

During his election campaign, Trump said he would seek to improve ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which were strained during President Barack Obama's administration.

A statue is pictured next to the logo of Germany's Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt, Germany September 30, 2016. That figure includes a $170-million loan Trump took out to finish a hotel in Washington. He also has two mortgages against his Trump National Doral Miami resort and a loan against his tower in Chicago. Bloomberg had originally reported that Mueller "zeroed in" on Trump. For one thing, it shows that Mueller has succeeded where Democratic lawmakers have failed: getting Deutsche to cough up details about the roughly $300 million Trump owed the bank for real-estate dealings before he ran for president.

Holding Trump debt, particularly if some of it was or is coming due, could potentially give Russian banks some leverage over Trump, especially if they are state-owned, said a second USA official familiar with Russian intelligence methods.

Mr Trump and Deutsche Bank have not always been on good terms.

In July, Trump said in an interview with the New York Times that if Mueller examined his family's finances beyond any relationship with Russian Federation he'd consider it "a violation". It looks really significant on the surface-since this is seemingly the first instance of Mueller's investigation directly targeting Trump for a potential crime other than obstruction of justice-but it's also entirely possible that this is the special counsel just trying to collect as much information as possible around an entity already under investigation by the Department of Justice.

This subpoena could simply be Mueller doing his due diligence, but it does seem to suggest that obstruction of justice is not the only focus of the special counsel.

However Trump's legal team disputed reports the subpoena is related to the president.
