Senate Advances Kirstjen Nielsen's Nomination for DHS Secretary Post

Senate confirms Kirstjen Nielsen to head Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen

The Senate confirmed President Trump's pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security after John KellyJohn Francis KellyMORE left the agency for his White House post earlier this year.

The decision came three weeks after the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved Nielsen's nomination and almost two months after President Donald Trump selected her for the DHS post. She previously was the White House's deputy chief of staff where she was widely considered a close Kelly ally.

"There will be no on-the-job training for Kirstjen", Trump said when he announced her nomination in October, praising her "sterling reputation".

Nielsen said at her confirmation hearing last month that climate change is a "crucial issue", noting the Trump administration is revising its climate models to better respond to rising sea level, but said the human impact on climate change is not fully understood. Some in Congress still have their doubt about the politics behind the move and whether she has what it takes to lead DHS.

Democrats complained that Nielsen lacks the experience needed to run a major agency with 240,000 employees.

"I can't unequivocally state it's caused by humans", she said.

Homeland Security oversees the nation's borders, cybersecurity and response to natural disasters, among other areas.

Throughout her confirmation process, Ms. Nielsen failed to demonstrate that she would provide the steady experienced leadership - free from political interference from the White House - that the department needs.

Homeland Security has been leading the charge on implementing Trump's aggressive immigration agenda, and Nielsen pledged to continue that work.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and a onetime prospect for the DHS top job, said, "I am confident that Kirstjen's mission-focused style of leadership will help her succeed in leading the men and women of DHS and ensuring we reform and improve the Department".

Her position will also drop her into the middle of multiple immigration fights, as senators debate how to address the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
