Pro-legitimacy forces in Yemen

The Qatari regime had been attempting since Friday to mediate a rapprochement between the Houthi militias and former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh's forces, an informed source told Asharq Al-Awsat on Saturday.

The Houthi-aligned television station, al-Masirah, stated: "The interior ministry announces the end of the crisis of the treason militia and the killing of its leader and a number of his criminal partisans".

Unverified footage circulated on social media appeared to a show corpse resembling Saleh, wrapped in a floral-print blanket with a severe head injury.

Meanwhile, Ali Abdullah Saleh's son Khaled has been reported wounded and captured by the Houthi rebels from the Ansar Allah movement, Al Mayadeen said.

Russia Today also, quoting its correspondent, said Saleh may have been at the permanent headquarter of the General People's Congress in Sana'a where he has been killed.

The Houthis' political office on December 2 accused Saleh of staging a "coup" against "an alliance he never believed in".

Those Houthi rebels' links to Iran led to a persistent air campaign from Yemen's neighbor Saudi Arabia, further plunging the country into violence and competing claims for the right to govern.

A senior official with Yemen's internationally-recognized government confirmed to The Associated Press that Saleh had been killed.

Yemenis in the war-torn country's capital crowded into basements overnight as Saudi-led fighter jets pounded the positions of Houthi rebels, who are now fighting forces loyal to a former president for control of the city.

The 75-year-old Saleh had previously ruled Yemen for more than three decades after the country's unification but was toppled in 2012 after popular and political pressure during the so-called Arab Spring. Witnesses said dead bodies, those of civilians and rebel fighters alike, littered the streets of Yemen's capital.

The country descended into a wider civil war that has killed more than 10,000 people while drawing in a Saudi-led military coalition, backed by the United States. His party's alliance with the Houthis disintegrated and the two sides fought bloody clashes in Sanaa, the capital, that killed dozens of people. Iran supports the Houthis but denies arming them.
