Arab media: 12 Iranians killed in 'Israeli strike' in Syria

Report Several Iranians killed in IDF strike on Syrian base

In a fresh escalation in the Middle East, Israel has fired missiles at a military position near Damascus over last night while Syria's air defence system has claimed of thwarting some of the attacks.

Syrian air defense claims to have intercepted at least two of the missiles fired at the base. But other media outlets reported that the target was a military base that Iran is building in the area, 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the Israeli border, and that loud explosions were heard after the attack.

"The air defences of the Syrian army were able to deal with the attack... destroying two of the missiles", it said, adding that the attack nonetheless caused "material damage".

Al-Masdar News reports that one of the targets was a Syrian army ammunition depot in the countryside between the towns of Kiswah and Sahnaya. In it, he addresses Iran's attempts to entrench itself in Syria and says Israel will not allow it.

Israel has grown deeply alarmed by Iran's expanding clout during the conflict, and has warned it would act against any threat from its regional foe Tehran.

The Israeli military has not confirmed if it carried out the strike.

Iran has provided critical support to President Bashar al-Assad's military in fighting Syrian rebels and Islamic State militants. The BBC published what it said were satellite images that it had commissioned that showed construction activity at the site between January and October this year.
