Uttar Pradesh also saw the highest number of crimes against women with 14.5 percent (49,262 cases) of the total cases.

Jharkhand has witnessed 36.13 per cent rise in corruption cases while crimes against women have dipped slightly, according to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB). The magnitude of this inflation is such that incidents under SLL are 10 times those registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which deals with crimes such as murder, theft, robbery and rape. In the crimes against children, 145 cases were of kidnapping or abduction, 46 were of compelling girls for marriage.

Delhi UT reported the highest crime rate (160.4) compared to the national average rate of 55.2.

The state topped the country in cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, as 11,396 cases were registered in 2016; ranking second in kidnapping and abduction of women, with 6,170 cases; and third in cases of rape, with 4,189 cases.


Crimes against children and elderly have increased.

Kidnapping and abduction of children accounted for 52.3% of the cases followed by cases reported under POCSO (Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act) - 34.4%. A total of 15,310 cases were reported in the union territory in 2016, down from 17,222 in 2015. Cases under dacoity have decreased by 4.5 per cent in 2015-16 with 3,795 cases in 2016 as compared to 3,972 in 2015. As for murder, Delhi registered 479 out of a total of 2,194 cases or 21.8 per cent followed by Bengaluru at 229 cases or 10.4 per cent and Patna at 195 cases or 8.9 per cent. Mumbai also had the second highest number of rape cases, at 712 cases, after Delhi that had 1,996 cases. Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of cases of atrocities against STs accounting for 27.8% followed by Rajasthan with 18.2% (1,195 cases) and Odisha with 10.4% (681 cases).

NCRB has chosen to correct this data for the past three years in its 2016 report.

The records further showed that of atotal of 41,761cases of various crimes against women recorded in 19 major metropolitan cities, Mumbai, at second place, accounted for 5,128 cases.

In cases of kidnapping and abduction of women, 3,364 cases were registered in Delhi, followed by 1,142 cases in Mumbai, and 674 cases in Bengaluru. Economic offences declined from 3,566 in 2015 to 3,119 in 2016.

While Uttar Pradesh reported 4,889 murder cases, the national capital reported almost 40 percent of rape cases.
