Michael Flynn pleads guilty for lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation

Michael Flynn is expected to plead guilty to lying to the FBI about his talk with the Russian ambassador to the US. AP

"The Statement of the Offense included important new details, including that Flynn was directed by a senior transition official to contact Russian officials in an effort to influence Russia's response to the Obama Administration's imposition of sanctions and the UN Security Council resolution vote on Israeli settlements, and, crucially, that he reported back to transition officials", he said.

Flynn was forced to resign in February after intelligence leaks showed he had lied to Pence and other senior U.S. government officials about his conversations with Kislyak in late December, when Trump was still president-elect. The statement is the first indication that Flynn is cooperating with the special counsel's office.

He is the first official who worked in the Trump White House to make a guilty plea in a wide-ranging investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller into possible co-ordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Flynn was formally charged by Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Friday, and has pleaded guilty to making a false statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation over his December 2016 phone call to Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

"Today, Michael Flynn, a former National Security Advisor at the White House for 25 days during the Trump Administration, and a former Obama administration official, entered a guilty plea to a single count of making a false statement to the FBI", Cobb said in a a statement, according to ABC News. After the others filed out, Trump made an insistent plea to Comey - who, it turns out, kept careful memos of this and other interactions he had with the president - to take it easy on General Michael T. Flynn, his national security adviser who'd been fired the previous day.

"Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn".

Days after Flynn's interview with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, then-acting attorney general, Sally Yates alerted White House counsel Don McGahn that Flynn was potentially compromised and vulnerable to blackmail because of discrepancies between public assertions - including by Vice President Mike Pence - that Flynn and Kislyak had not discussed sanctions and the reality of what occurred. "I accept full responsibility for my actions", he said.

In a striking rupture with past practice, the Obama administration refrained from vetoing the condemnation, opting instead to abstain.

Friday's news made clear that Trump's inner circle, if not the president himself, are increasingly under threat by Mueller's investigation.

Trump ignored reporters' shouted questions as he welcomed the Libyan prime minister to the White House, and aides canceled media access to a later meeting between the two.

Mueller's investigators have interviewed members of Trump's family, his top advisors, business partners and lawyers over their actions.

Since the first allegations of Russian interference past year, Trump has dismissed it as "fake news" and an excuse for Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's stunning loss in the election.

In October, Paul Manafort, Trump's one-time campaign chairman, and Manafort's deputy Rick Gates were arrested on money laundering and tax-related charges in relation to their work for Moscow-backed Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych.

Flynn is at the center of a broader investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into the Russian meddling in the 2016 US Presidential election campaign.
