Islamabad crackdown: Protesters ransack Law Minister Zahid Hamid's house in Pasrur

Latest world news Six dead 230 injured as protest creates havoc in Islamabad

Thousands of security forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets as the demonstrators blocked roads and burned police vehicles around the site of the sit-in, which has virtually paralysed the capital for the whole day. All the news channels have also been suspended.

At least one person was killed and over 200 injured after police moved in to break "blasphemy" protests.

. A total of 54 people were reportedly delivered to hospitals, including 14 security officials as clashes between police and demonstrators erupted.

The operation was launched after Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued contempt of court notice against Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal as he failed to clear the roads off the protesters.

The protesters, belonging to the Tehreek-e-Labbaik, broke into and ransacked the minister's haveli, Express News reported. "Suggested to handle Islamabad Dharna peacefully avoiding violence from both sides as it is not in national interest and cohesion", Major General Asif Ghafoor, the director general of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said in a tweet referring to the conversation between General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

They reported that police arrested around 150 protesters, some with knives and pistols. Nine people were injured and taken to a nearby hospital, doctors said.

Pakistan-protest

"We can see that they have various resources at their disposal".

Apart from the capital, protests are reportedly taking place in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi and northern district of Sialkot.

The sincerity of the government to handle the situation amicably could also be gauged from the fact that despite clear instructions from the courts to use any mean to disperse the protestors, it demonstrated restraint and firstly opted for the dialogue.

The protesters belonging to religious parties - Tehreek-i-Khatm-i-Nabuwwat, Tehreek-i-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) and the Sunni Tehreek Pakistan (ST) -are calling for the sacking of Law Minister Zahid Hamid and strict action against those behind the amendment to the Khatm-i-Nabuwwat oath in the Elections Act 2017.

Smaller demonstrations were breaking out in Lahore and other cities, according to local media.
