Southern California will be roasting on Thanksgiving Day

Record-breaking heat wave hits western US for Thanksgiving

This would mark the latest 90 degree day ever recorded in Tucson since records have been kept.

The National Weather Service said it is expected to stay relatively warm through the weekend with temperatures expected to be 15-20 degrees above normal throughout the state.

The mercury began rising again Wednesday morning and by afternoon temperatures were well above normal seasonal averages.

The National Weather Service at Lincoln predicted a high of 62 degrees for today, but also issued a hazardous weather outlook cautioning about strong wind gusts that could create issues for large vehicles traveling on east-west roads.

Previously, the record for November 24 was 59 degrees, set in 1990 and 2011, the weather service said.

The hot, dry conditions can be attributed to a ridge of high pressure lingering above the region, sending desert air flowing toward the coast, an NWS meteorologist told the Los Angeles Times.

Thursday's high at Santa Barbara Airport is forecast to be a relatively chilly 83 degrees. Tuesday's high will drop down to 64 degrees with 15-25 miles per hour winds that could gust up to 35 miles per hour, the weather service said.

Los Angeles isn't the only region experiencing record temperatures during the Thanksgiving holiday week.

Burbank could reach 91 degrees, beating the previous record of 86 in 1950.
