Watch Donald Trump pardon turkeys

Some historians point to President Abraham Lincoln's decision to free a Christmas bird that his son had grown fond of as the first presidential turkey pardoning.

The recipients will be Wishbone and Drumstick, two roughly 40-pound turkeys, who were selected by the National Turkey Federation to be spared from the Thanksgiving Day feast this Thursday. The two will now live out their days at "Gobbler's Rest", on the Virginia Tech campus, along with last year's turkeys, Tater and Tot.

Of course, the turkey doesn't get to stay (sorry Tad, no turkeys for pets at the White House).

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A good presidential turkey is stuffed with showmanship.

"I've been very active in overturning a number of actions by my predecessor".

"I have been informed by the White House counsel's office that Tater and Tot's pardons can not under any circumstances be revoked", he joked. "He refused. He was a tough cookie", Trump said.

"I'm pleased to report that, unlike millions of other turkeys at this time of the year, Drumstick has a very, very bright future ahead of him", Trump said.

The Kennedy, Nixon and Carter administrations reportedly turned away turkeys they were presented with, and sending them off to farms became common practice under President Reagan, according to the WHHA.

Gone were the groan-inducing dad jokes and lighthearted fun of Obama's turkey pardons. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush became the first to make the pardon explicit.
