Indian football fraternity also mourned the death of former AIFF President Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who served in the position for almost two decades.

Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the death of Dasmunsi.

Das Munshi was so popular in political circles in Kolkata that during the 2016 campaign for the assembly elections he was included in the 90-member campaign committee for the state, despite him being in coma.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bnaerjee has conveyed her condolence over the death of the Congress leader.

Dasmunsi is survived by his wife Deepa and son Priyadeep who were at his bedside at the time of his passing.

Dasmunsi's body is to be taken to the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road in New Delhi, where top party leaders, including vice-president Rahul Gandhi, will pay their homage to the leader. His contribution to Indian football, especially in starting the national league, was tremendous.

Dasmunsi, aged 72, was in coma after suffering a stroke in 2008. He was treated in Apollo Hospital in New Delhi since 2009.

Dasmunsi represented the Raiganj (Lok Sabha constituency) in West Bengal, which was later represented by his Deepa.

PM Modi said Dasmunsi was a "popular leader" with rich political and administrative experience. She said Dasmunsi served the party as well as the government "illustriously".

Sonia expressed solidarity with the leader's family, particularly his wife Deepa Dasmunsi, and supporters.

He was sworn in as Union Minister of State, Commerce in 1985.

Dasmunsi first became the AIFF President in 1989, succeeding K Ziauddin, and held the position for 19 years.

He was the information and broadcasting minister during Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Following his bright academic career, Das Munshi joined the Indian Youth Congress and soon graduated to earning a ticket to the Lok Sabha constituency in 1971. "Otherwise, he could have done more in his political life", she added.

Dasmunshi was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on 12 October 2008, after he complained of breathlessness and severe chest pain.
