Bruce Arians on fourth-down decision: I cost our team the game

This will be a battle of the backup quarterbacks. The Cardinals will start either backup Drew Stanton or third-stringer Blaine Gabbert and while Tom Savage will be the quarterback for the Texans

In a battle teams playing without their starting quarterbacks, the Houston Texans outlasted the Arizona Cardinals, 31-21, on the heels of strong performance on the ground for Houston.

He made plays, but didn't make plays late. Arians told reporters that Stanton, who has a sprained knee, will be Blaine Gabbert's backup if he can physically play.

Free agent running back Chris Johnson was released by the Cardinals back in October after the team traded for Adrian Peterson.

The Cardinals had gotten a career-high three touchdown passes out of their third-string QB, but trailed, 24-21, with six minutes to go.

"It's obvious. I thought we'd make it", Arians said when asked why go for it. "At that point in the game, in retrospect, we should have punted".

For various reasons, there's been a dramatic falloff for both the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals when it comes to their defensive units this season. Future Hall of Fame wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald showed his continued worth on the Cardinals offense by racking up nine receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown, but it wouldn't be enough as the Cardinals fell to 4-6. Arizona led 14-10. The 28-year-old Gabbert completed 56.9 percent of his passes for 925 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions in six games last season. Whether its Stanton or Gabbert under center, Cardinals need improved play at the position to win and keep themselves in the playoff hunt.

The Cardinals also missed some chances on some catchable balls for a second straight game, which clearly had the attention of Arians. "I trusted Adrian, and we just turned too many guys loose up the middle".

The defense did come up with the turnovers but had trouble pressuring struggling Texans quarterback Tom Savage.
