Pentagon issues data on sexual assault reports at its bases

Sexual assault reports at Maryland military bases increase

Reported sexual assaults at USA military installations worldwide increased from 2013 to 2016, with the most occurring in Army during the period, the Defense Department said a new report Friday.

In 2016, the summary says, Fort Bragg received 146 reports of sexual assault.

The figures released on Friday come after a separate report earlier this year which highlighted how there had been a steady increase of sexual assault reports over the past several years.

The Pentagon classifies reports of sexual assault as either unrestricted or restricted.

While Fort Campbell's number increase dramatically between 2013 and 2016, the number of reported sexual assaults dropped at Fort Knox. "This kind of flexibility allows the department to better meet the department's goals to increase reporting of sexual assault and decrease the occurrence of the crime through prevention." said Galbreath. Campbell spokesman in a statement.

Since 2012, SAPRO's annual reports on sexual assault in the military have shown regular declines in the rates, although the statistics have been disputed by advocacy groups and several members of Congress. In fiscal 2016, the DoD estimates that about 32 percent of service members who experienced a sexual assault reported the incident.

The Air Force Academy in Colorado had 44 reports, the highest for the Air Force. Sexual assault reports there peaked in 2015 at 125.

A restricted report is one made confidentially by a victim who may be seeking "advocacy, support services, medical care, and mental health counseling" and is not referred to criminal investigation, SAPRO said.

The DOD on Friday released the numbers for installations, and combat areas of interest, around the world in the last four fiscal years.

San Diego is the second largest Navy complex following Norfolk, Virginia, which had the most sexual assault reports of any Navy base in 2016: 240. It does clarify, however, that just because an assault was reported at a certain military base, it does not mean the actual crime occurred there. "A report could involve allegations for an incident that occurred while on deployment, while away on leave, or even prior to entering the military", he said.

Other bases that recorded higher numbers included Fort Hood, a U.S. Army Base in Killeen, Texas, that fielded 199 reports of sexual assault past year, and Camp Lejeune, a Marine base in Jacksonville, N.C., that received 169 reports.
