Oh Snap! White House misidentifies Huskies' championship squad

South Carolina women's basketball finally invited to White House, but it's too late

On Thursday, the team finally got their invite to attend the White House on Friday, but they passed.

On Thursday, head coach Dawn Staley said her team was extended an invitation by the White House but has turned it down. "We won before those other teams won their championships". Both the Warriors and the Penguins won their titles months after SC did.

SC head women's basketball coach Dawn Staley made her first remarks Friday after releasing a statement saying her team was skipping a White House invitation to focus on the season.

The invite for Friday, when the White House is set to hold an event honoring NCAA champions happens to fall on the same day Staley says her team needed to practice.

Back in June, President Trump hosted the 2016 national football champion Clemson Tigers at the White House. "The only invitation we're thinking about", Staley said in a statement, "is to the 2018 N.C.A.A. tournament".

Trump sparred with professional athletes earlier this year when National Basketball Association star Stephen Curry said his championship-winning Golden State Warriors didn't wish to meet with Trump.

This is the University of Washington's women's rowing team, not the women's rugby team. One of those will be College World Series Champion Florida. "We'll go to the White House", she said at the time.

The North Carolina men's basketball team said last week that it won't visit the White House because of a scheduling conflict.

He whacked a volleyball with the Ohio State men on the South Lawn, called attention to a Maryland lacrosse player wearing a Trump '16 tie and mimicked a rifle with his hands as he approached West Virginia's coed rifle team.
