Malcolm Young, guitarist and founding member of AC/DC, dies at 64

Malcolm Young of the rock band AC DC performs at the Met Center in Bloomington Minnesota on the Fly On the Wall tour

Malcolm Young, who founded the Australian rock band AC/DC along with his brother Angus, has died at age 64 after suffering from dementia for several years, the band said on its Facebook page on Saturday.

"Today it is with deep heartfelt sadness that AC/DC has to announce the passing of Malcolm Young", the band stated in the post.

Former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Gus G. called Young "co-founder Of the greatest Rock n Roll band ever". Malcolm's younger brother Angus, 62, is famous for the on-stage antics that he performs while wearing a schoolboy's uniform.

The band concludes the message with a simple tribute to Malcolm stating that the guitarist "leaves behind an enormous legacy that will live on forever". They're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and Angus' schoolboy costume has even spent time in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Over the decades, AC/DC's swaggering, hard-driving songs - hits like "Highway to Hell", "Back In Black" and "You Shook Me All Night Long" - were power-chord perfection to hard rock and metal fans across the globe, and made them a multi-decade institution.

The post continues, "He always stuck to his guns and did and said exactly what he wanted". The albums were produced by brother George and his songwriting partner Harry Vanda, who brought out the pop sensibilities in the band's crushing template.

The band is also one of the best-selling in music history, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, having sold more than 70 million albums in the US. By 1980, AC/DC was working on what became its breakthrough album, Back in Black, when Scott died of acute alcohol poisoning. It was one of 168 gigs the band played in support of their fifteenth studio album "Black Ice", which was released in 2008. He was replaced by Brian Johnson. "I toured with AC/DC on their "Stiff Upper Lip" tour". Still, the band remained a formidable touring force and continued to pack in giant crowds across the globe, its crushing sound and simple lyrics needing no translation. Angus is still with the band and appeared on their latest tour, the Rock or Bust trek. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen said "it is a sad day in rock and roll".
