What does firing of AD mean for Bret Bielema?

Jeff Long out as Arkansas athletics director

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long will be replaced, two reports Wednesday morning said.

It is unclear if he was sacked or resigned from the position.

Senior associate athletic director Julie Cromer Peoples was appointed interim director of athletics pending a search for a new hire. Though Petrino had success, 34-17 overall, Petrino's off the field issues that included an affair whom he hired to work in the athletic department was brought to light. Long hired Bielema from Wisconsin in December 2012, a move praised at the time because Bielema had won three consecutive Big Ten championships.

Long's contract is due to expire June 30, 2018.

FootballScoop.com said an official announcement would come later in the day.

"The decision to change leadership in our athletics department is not an easy one, and was made with great deliberation, discussion and thought, after consultation with the Board of Trustees and president (Donald) Bobbitt", Steinmetz said.

"Until it's been officially notified to me, I hear from people officially and then it's just you know like everybody else, just gather the information until it goes".

"(He's been) awesome, not for me as the head coach, of course he has been, but for our student-athletes", Bielema said. "I know this, winning ball games helps everybody, so that's all I'm focused on".

In 1988 he was assistant athletic director at Rice while serving in a similar position at MI for 10 years. He served as the chairperson and face of the College Football Playoff selection committee in 2014 and 2015. She has been recognized for her outstanding work at both the institutional and national levels. The 43-year-old Alabama native played for the Tide and spent the first 16 years of his coaching career in the state.
