Jeff Sessions: Not politically 'influenced' to review Clinton, Obama Russian uranium deal

Under fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions will be pressed Tuesday in a House Judiciary Committee hearing over what he knew about contacts between the Trump election campaign last year and Russia

Meanwhile, the Senate Judiciary Committee is planning a Tuesday interview with a Russian-American lobbyist who attended a campaign meeting previous year with Trump's son, according to a person familiar with the interview.

Mr Sessions said he does not remember speaking to Carter Page during the 2016 presidential campaign about a trip that the former foreign policy campaign adviser took to Russian Federation.

Sessions also told the House committee that he did not recall an encounter with another campaign adviser, Carter Page.

Sessions, then a senator from Alabama, led a foreign policy advisory council for the Trump campaign.

Sessions responded to these revelations by insisting that he'd met with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in his capacity as USA senator (not as a Trump surrogate), and that they did not discuss the 2016 election. It was a brilliant campaign in many ways.

As such, Pirro has offered Trump advice on matters foreign and domestic, with a recent report indicating that she advised the president to appoint a special counsel to investigate the alleged misdeeds of Hillary Clinton, including the former secretary of state's involvement with the Uranium One deal.

Sessions later said he recalled the meeting following news reports about it.

The attorney general previously recused himself from matters related to the 2016 presidential campaign.

The private charitable foundation of former President Bill Clinton had ties to some of the companies involved in the deal, and Republicans have called for an investigation.

While the Justice Department is part of the executive branch - and the attorney general is appointed by and answers to the president - the White House generally provides input on broad policy goals and does not weigh in on criminal probes.

"I will not accept and reject accusations that I have ever lied under oath". After his confirmation hearing, it came to light that Sessions had met with Russian officials during the campaign, prompting his recusal from the investigation and leading to the special counsel's appointment. As well, another aide, Carter Page, told Congress in private statements that he had alerted Sessions about a meeting he planned in Russian Federation during the campaign. "I have always told the truth, and I have answered every question as I understood them and to the best of my recollection, as I will continue to do today". That time, he said he conducted no "improper discussions with Russians at any time regarding a campaign or any other item facing this country", though he allowed it was possible in one of his conversations "some comment was made about what Trump's positions were".

Last month, he faced the Senate judiciary committee for further questions about his changing story, with Democrats dismayed that Sessions continued to cite executive privilege in refusing to discuss any conversations with President Donald Trump.
