Magnitude 7.3 Earthquake Kills At Least 6 In Iraq, Injures 150

Magnitude 7.3 earthquake hits Iraq, Iran

Large parts of Iraq have been shaken by a 7.2 magnitude natural disaster.

"Four people were killed by the earthquake" in Darbandikhan, the Iraqi town's mayor Nasseh Moulla Hassan told AFP.

An quake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale has rocked northern Iraq, the US Geological Survey said on Sunday.

The semi-official Iranian ILNA news agency reported that at least 14 provinces had been impacted by the quake. There has been no official report from Iraq's government.

U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 7.2 natural disaster has hit Iraq near the city of Sulaymaniyah. In the town of Diyarbakir, locals also left their homes before returning. Electricity had been cut in the area and rescue teams had been dispatched to the area.

It was so strong that it was felt in various cities in Western Iran and even Tehran, and also in the neighbouring countries, particularly Kuwait.

Iranian TV says Iraqi officials have reported at least six people dead on Iraq's side of the border from Sunday's quake.

Two people have died in the city of Qasr-e Shirin, Iranian TV reported, citing the country's Emergency Services.

According to official numbers, 5,000 people were killed and 7,000 injured when Iraq's then-president Saddam Hussein ordered a chemical attack on the city on March 16, 1988.
