Alabama official uses Bible to condone sexual misconduct

Alabama GOP nominee for Senate Roger Moore

On Thursday, senior Republicans, including President Donald Trump, swiftly called for Moore to step aside from the Senate race if the allegations are shown to be true.

"There's a very odd propensity of sexual allegations to suddenly become politically useful in the run-up to an election, or when someone stands up for the principles of the republic, like Clarence Thomas, and needs to be taken down", said Sebastian Gorka, a former White House adviser who became a Fox News contributor this week. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters traveling with Trump in Asia that the president believes a "mere allegation" - especially one from many years ago - shouldn't be allowed to destroy a person's life.

Washington Republicans have called for Moore to step aside if the allegations are true.

"As far as we know, there's only one relationship that's been alleged that's problematic", Pollak said, referring to Moore's alleged sexual contact with a 14-year-old. That could be just noise in a poll with a small sample size, but if it indicates Evangelicals (Moore's base) are reacting more strongly to the Post allegations than others, Moore is in bigger trouble than the overall numbers indicate.

Mr. Mowery cited Moore's overwhelming popularity with Alabama's Republican voters, who he said would tend to distrust allegations published in the Post.

He first became a national figure in the early 2000s, when he lost his position as Alabama chief justice after refusing a court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from outside the courthouse.

"I'm not buying it", Henry said.

Earlier this week, he reportedly said "transgenders don't have rights".

Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore of Alabama is facing lurid allegations of sexual misconduct with minors decades ago - and an immediate backlash from party leaders demanding he get out of the race if the accusations prove true. The revelations come a month before the December 12 special election, and they're triggering a backlash from would-be Republican colleagues on Capitol Hill, who are calling on the 70-year-old conservative Christian to quit the race if the allegations are true.

Three other women said they had similar experiences with Moore when they were teenagers.

As of Friday morning, the senators' pictures still appear on the online link to Moore's fundraising appeal.

I strongly urge the Washington Post, and everyone involved, to tell the truth. And 54% do not believe Moore should withdraw from the race because of it; 35% do. "Can the people of Alabama be tricked by the liberal fake news or not?"

The campaign released a statement on Thursday after The Washington Post reported the Alabama Republican candidate had sexual contact with one teenager and pursued three others almost four decades ago.

"In a statement, Moore's campaign chairman, Bill Armistead, said, 'Judge Roy Moore has endured the most outlandish attacks on any candidate in the modern political arena, but this story in today's Washington Post alleging sexual impropriety takes the cake".

Zeigler also questioned the truthfulness of the allegation and noted Moore's strong denial.

At least two said they would vote for Moore even if he had committed sex crimes against a 14-year-old. We'll get to the NRSC story in a monent, but it's set up by this interview from yesterday between the state's top election official, Secretary of State John Merrill, and CNN's Erin Burnett.

Judge Roy Moore said Friday that while he did date "a number of young ladies" when he returned from the military, he would have never had contact with a 14 year old.

It remains to be see whether Thursday's allegations can buoy Jones' long-shot bid, which would represent a major upset for Democrats and narrow Republicans' current edge in the Senate.

Other Republican senators weighing in included Jeff Flake of Arizona, David Perdue of Georgia, John Thune of South Dakota, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Richard Shelby of Alabama and Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania. Sen. "I believe Leigh Corfman", he said of the Alabama woman who said Moore molested her when she was 14. They did not have sexual intercourse, according to the report. The age of consent in Alabama is 16.

Several religious scholars objected to Zeigler's use of the Bible to defend Moore.
