Your PlayStation Trophies are now worth virtual Sony bucks, hooray money!

PlayStation Trophies Now Earn You PSN Credits to Spend

An update to Sony Rewards (via GameFAQs) has introduced a new method of earning PSN credit: unlocking trophies.

Sony #Rewards has recently added #Playstation Trophies to the list of ways to earn points based on how many trophies you have. Under the new terms, 100 silver trophies are worth 100 points, 25 gold trophies get you 250 points, and 10 platinum trophies award 1,000 points.

This seems like a neat idea for players moving forward, still impressed with Sony's consoles and line-ups, but it could similarly mean a lot of work for players retreading old ground, especially those that have previously earned platinum trphies in the past which requires every trophy in a game to be collected first.

However, and this is a bit of a bummer to a large part of the PlayStation fanbase, the rewards scheme only applies to those in the United States. Maybe you have a plethora of easy games to platinum on hand that will let you earn some quick cash. You could put that toward two $10 PlayStation Store discount coupons, which are 1,000 points each. Xbox Live Rewards' MyVIP program offers reward credits based on the achievements you earn, among other factors.

All of this is good news for PlayStation fans but what about Xbox fans?

Microsoft Xbox boss Phil Spencer heard about it, and has tweeted a very gracious comment about Sony's new program. For many, achievements have become an addiction of sorts and forces those who want the 1000 gamerscore to do things they wouldn't normally do.

In the past, "trophy hunters" earned their trophies purely for bragging rights, but it's nice to see actual monetary value applied to them now. They were always harmless to begin with and players didn't have to sweat over them but now they have some important uses that will make them harder to ignore.
