Paul Newman Rolex sells for more than US$17 million

Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona Just Broke The Record As The World's Most Expensive Watch

Unlike many celebrity-associated watches, Newman actually wore and owned this watch himself.

It certainly was magical when it ws on the block at the Phillips auction in NY, where it garnered an opening bid of $10 million and ended up going for $15.5 million to an anonymous phone bidder who will pay a total of $17,752,500 after fees. It was a gift from his wife, Joanne Woodward, who engraved it, "Drive Carefully, Me".

With Newman's reputation, it's not a surprise that one of his watches became one of the most highly sought-after accessories in the world after it was announced in June that his "Daytona" Rolex would be auctioned off.

The watch that appears in many photos of Paul Newman is also known for its interesting history. After years of keeping the watch in a safe box, Cox made a decision to put it up for auction this year, with proceeds going to the Nell Newman Foundation.

That is until he stopped wearing it in 1984.

A constant beloved companion of Paul Newman for years, the late Hollywood star´s Rolex has sold for $17.8 million, setting a world auction record for a wristwatch, Phillips said Friday.

After that, the trail of the watch goes cold until Cox brought it to Phillips to auction with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the Nell Newman Foundation and Newman's Own Foundation. Adding the buyer's premium, the final price rounds up to more than US$17.75 million, a record for any wristwatch at auction. Cox said at the time he knew Rolex was an excellent brand, but he didn't realize the significance behind the watch. "If you wind it, it tells pretty good time".

The timepiece was so "rare", so "famous" and so "legendary", that watch collectors and dealers exhausted of adjectives and turned to full-throated phrases.
