Pedroia to miss 2018 start for Red Sox after surgery

Pedroia also underwent surgery on the same knee last October, that time to fix a torn meniscus.

The Boston Red Sox announced that Dustin Pedroia will be out for seven months after surgery on his left knee.

The Red Sox described the surgery, performed in NY, as "cartilage restoration".

It is anticipated that Pedroia would return to games in approximately seven months, the Red Sox said in a press release.

Pedroia's 0.19 nERD marked his worst season since his rookie year way back in 2006.

Pedroia was still fairly productive, batting.293, but his ability to stay on the field has been a concern of late, as the 34-year-old was also limited to just 93 games in 2015. The Red Sox lost in four games to the Astros in the American League Division Series, with Pedroia going 2-for-16. He's the fourth member of the Red Sox to undergo surgery this offseason, joining first baseman/DH Hanley Ramirez, starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez and reliever Robby Scott.

Pedroia made two trips to the disabled list (29 days combined) during 2017 because of left knee inflammation.
