BJP irks critics for demanding cuts in Tamil movie 'Mersal'

Mersal sets up non Rajini record with OS premiers

Parasakthi, the debut film of Tamil film icon Sivaji Ganesan had released in 1952 and Chidambaram's reference to it vis-à-vis the controversy over Mersal is perhaps because the movie's dialogues, written by DMK chief M Karunanidhi who was then a budding leader in the party and a screen writer, espoused reformist and egalitarian ideals.

In one scene actor, Vijay's character in the film laments at the government's inability to provide free healthcare for all in India despite "high" GST rates in India, saying Singapore is able to fund a free health scheme despite a much lower GST rate. The producers have agreed to cut the objectionable GST scene from the movie Mersal. The film released worldwide on October 18.

A statement issued by Sri Thenandal Films reads, "We have met senior BJP leaders in person and spoke over the film and told them that the aim of the film is not to hurt anyone. We have obtained certification board's and that's the end of it", said a person close to the actor. BJP's demand has stoked a major political controversy, with national leaders asking the ruling party at the Centre to respect freedom of speech and expression.

Raja had earlier said that he was also trying to establish if the producer of Tamil film, Mersal, Hema Rukmani, too was a Christian. "Mersal was certified. Don't re-censor it. Counter-criticism with a logical response. Dont silence critics. India will shine when it speaks", he tweeted.

There were two scenes in Mersal that the BJP objected to. On Friday, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan said it is important to cut down the dialogue that actor Vijay termed untruths about the Goods and Services Tax. When these scenes are played in the theatre, there is a lot of claps as people appreciated and supported them.
