Egyptian police officers killed in shootout with militants

В Египте произошла перестрелка много погибших

BBC reported that more than 50 police officers were killed during clashes, while local media said 35 citing security sources.

Egypt has been struggling to contain an insurgency by Islamic militants led by an affiliate of the Islamic State group, centred mostly across the Suez Canal in the northern region of the Sinai Peninsula.

The interior ministry released a statement on the operation on Friday but has so far not given any details on casualties. Clashes erupted when they tried to arrest them and they exchanged fire.

It also said that 13 policemen, including four officers and nine conscripts, were injured and one policeman was missing.

The exchange took place in the al-Wahat al-Bahriya area in the Giza governorate, about 135 kilometres (84 miles) from the Egyptian capital, after security services received information on the militants' location, the official said.

He too said eight other security personnel were wounded in the attack.

But, according to a security source, their convoy came under attack by militants using rocket-propelled grenades and explosive devices. The Muslim Brotherhood denies this.

He also called on officials to exert all possible efforts to capture the terrorist elements involved in the shootout.

Egypt has been under a state of emergency since April when a twin church attack killed scores.

The country has been in a heightened state of turmoil and violence since the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's first democratically-elected president, in mid-2013 following mass protests against his rule.

Terror attacks in Egypt used to be centered in North Sinai before spreading nationwide and killing hundreds of policemen and soldiers over the past few years.
