Look up to see the Orionids meteor shower tonight

Orionid Meteor Shower 2017

While the meteor shower occurs every year, Halley's Comet itself is only visible from Earth every 75 years.

Fortunately, strong moonlight will not interfere with this year's show.

He told Express.co.uk: "The Orionids are not often viewed by astronomers". They're actually debris from the famous Halley's Comet. The meteor shower will start near the sword in the constellation.

Cooke told Space.com that, depending on the year, there can be a peak of anywhere between 20 to 80 meteors in a single hour. The meteors themselves don't really show up until they have moved roughly 30 degrees from the radiant point. Once you find the Belt then look left and find the bright star Betelgeuse. "The best time is in the wee hours of the morning towards the east and you can expect 15-20 meteors per hour", Hunt said.

The best time to see the meteors will be around 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, so either plan that nap or settle in for a late night.

Feel free to ditch your telescope, though a pair of binoculars at hand could help you trace the shooting stars - but remember that they dash across the sky incredibly fast. If you watch the sky for long enough, you have a very good chance of seeing one of these streak across the sky.

And it doesn't matter where you are, Newsweek reported, as the meteor shower will be visible from any place on earth. The constellation is placed in the sky above Sirius, the brightest star in the sky.

It's best to find a wide open space away from tall buildings or trees, and with as little light as possible.

Rick Saunders, president of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, suggested amateur astronomers head out into local wildlife areas. To get the best view, you're supposed to lie flat on the ground and just stare up at the sky - so best to take some warm clothes and a cheeky hot chocolate with you.

Astronomers in the United States can look forward to clear skies in the southwestern and eastern parts of the country.
