Virginia Polls Show Northam's lead in Governor Race

United States Vice President Mike Pence joins Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie onstage during a party rally Saturday evening at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Abingdon

The poll from the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University shows 48 percent of likely voters surveyed are in favor of Democrat Ralph Northam, while 44 percent of those polled like Republican Ed Gillespie.

According to a Roanoke College poll, Northam has a six point lead. That's in contrast to three other polls released yesterday that ranged anywhere from a six-point lead for Northam to a one-point edge for Gillespie.

"This has never been more than a five point race in Monmouth's polling, and that means either candidate has a very real shot at winning this thing". Northam also reported 6,860 donations under a $100 in September, more than twice the number of small-dollar donations Gillespie received. "But there's plenty of room and time left for Northam to close the deal or for Gillespie to close the gap".

The poll found that Northam is expanding his vote share in Northern Virginia, while Gillespie has been gaining ground in the western part of the state.

But so far, Trump has not been a big factor, Murray said. A slim majority of Northam voters (51%) say their vote is a message of disapproval of Trump and the Republican majority in Congress, while 39% say no message is intended. Northam told the moderator he stood by his previous comments.

Meanwhile, when pressed to respond to a question of whether he'd support impeaching Mr. Trump, Gillespie didn't directly answer, saying instead that the state is in need of a "governor who can work with the president, vice president and administration".

On healthcare: Northam 42; Gillespie 32.
