Samsung to release a trackable 'Connect Tag' for your kids and pets

Samsung launches NB-IoT GPS smart tag

Samsung Electronics has launched a smart tag that uses an NB-IoT network. It is optimal for indoor and outdoor use, Samsung said, including pet and children tracking, protecting personal items, and attaching to luggage. The Connect Tag itself is a mere 4.21 centimeters wide and 1.19 centimeters thick, with IP68 water and dustproof rating for durability. An attachable ring will enable it to be hung on bags and key chains.

In order to build upon its IoT ecosystem, Samsung has made the Connect Tag compatible with SmartThings, which means it will work in conjunction with other IoT devices. The device offers smart location notifications on a NB-IoT or Cat.M1 network to help a user conveniently see how far their belonging is.

The Samsung Connect Tag links to a mobile app - Android only at this stage - and this can be used at any time to check the location of the tag.

The Connect Tag also features Send my location function, which allows one to share the current location with their guardian, so even a young child can let you know exactly where he or she is, allowing you to pick him/her up safely. Samsung Connect Tag can provide you with the tracking of your valuable things.

Samsung hypothethises that parents will use it to ensure their children have entered the schoolyard in the morning or for a heads up when their dog leaps the backyard fence. The battery should last for up to a week on a single charge.

The company writes: "The geo-fence feature on the Samsung Connect Tag will notify the user's chosen smart devices when he or she approaches - so if the user wants lights and TV to turn on while getting home from a nightly run, the Samsung Connect Tag can trigger these products as the user enters the pre-defined zone". The tiny gadget will be shown at San Francisco's Moscone Center on October 17th and 18th, while sales will first start in Korea before expanding to other markets over the next few months.
