Chrissy Teigen & Women Around The World Are Boycotting Twitter Today

89th Annual Academy Awards- Arrivals

"Twitter will take a "more aggressive stance" regarding its rules involving 'unwanted sexual advances, non-consensual nudity, hate symbols, violent groups and tweets that glorify violence", Dorsey tweeted.

However, what leeway the social network appeared to be making with targeted users and critics was all but stripped from the company on Wednesday, when Twitter restricted Rose McGowan's access to her account for 12 hours after she tweeted out a private phone number, subsequently violating the company's terms of service. The movie mogul was sacked last Sunday by the company he co-founded amid accusations that he sexually harassed or sexually assaulted women.

Responding to high-profile #WomenBoycottTwitter protest, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has said that the company was now changing its policies around how it vets content. "We've been working to counteract this for the past 2 years", Dorsey tweeted. Though Twitter is ubiquitous in media because of frequent use by US President Donald Trump and many celebrities, the company has struggled financially.

He went on to say that "we chose to take a more aggressive stance in our rules and how we enforce them".

In 2017, he declared - without specifics - that "we made it our top priority and made a lot of progress". "We will be clearer about these policies and decisions in the future". The updates will "start rolling out in the next few weeks", he added. "We stand with the fearless women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices".

Exactly how many users participated in the boycott remains uncertain, but it became a trending topic earlier this week, and now - Twitter has taken notice.

Last night, Chrissy Teigen, Alyssa Milano, and thousands of women (and men!) on the microblogging platform called for a day off to not only stand in solidarity with actress Rose McGowan, but to encourage the site to do better when it comes to abusive messages and the way women are treated.
