Paris hopes to ban gas-powered cars in city by 2030

That promise comes in the wake of Mayor Anne Hidalgo's recently announced plan to ban all diesel cars from the French capital by 2024, the year when Paris will host the Summer Olympics.

The world's most visited city, Paris, plans to prohibit fossil-fueled cars from entering city before 2030.

Christophe Najdovski, one of Paris's transportation officials, told the radio station France Info, "Transport is one of the main greenhouse gas producers.so we are planning an exit from combustion engine vehicles, or fossil-energy vehicles, by 2030".

Paris' City Hall released a statement commending France for its 2040 timeline but said quicker action must occur in larger cities, according to Reuters.

On the heels of France and the United Kingdom announcing plans to phase out sales of combustion-engined cars by 2040, the state of California is mulling a similar move much earlier than the 2040 target date, .

Many Parisians do not own cars, relying on extensive public transport systems and, increasingly, fast-burgeoning networks offering bikes, scooters and low-pollution hybrid engine cars for shot-term rental.

Paris has seen significant amounts of rising air pollution in the last few years.

The ban on petrol-fueled, or gasoline-engine vehicles as they are known in the United States, marks a radical escalation of anti-pollution policy. Hidalgo also introduced car-free days and zones as well as a 20-mph (32 kph) speed limit throughout the city. Paris is already part of a group of cities that includes Madrid, Mexico City and Athens that plan to end the use of diesel-engined cars by 2025, collectively representing metropolises that are home to 42 million people. Accounting for more than 40% of the total market, diesel cars have been pointed out as a major source of pollutants and NOx emissions.

It was announced that decision would not affect electric vehicles.
