Trump to announce Iran nuke deal decision 'very shortly'

President Trump reportedly wants to return the U.S. to the level of nuclear weapons stockpiled in the 1960s

If he does that, Congress would then have 60 days to decide whether to re-impose the sanctions against Iran, which were lifted under the JCPOA.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic's compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the USA, have failed to live up to their undertakings. Iran has always insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and denies it has aimed to build an atomic bomb.

Last month, Trump, during an address before the United Nations General Assembly, said, "The Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into frankly that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don't think you've heard the last of it". "He's been quite clear for a long time that it's not his plan to certify it". "We got nothing", Trump told Fox News on Wednesday in reference to the 2015 accord negotiated with Iran by the United States and five other world powers.

Deutch said the danger of walking away from the agreement is that those expiration dates "would have effectively dropped from a decade to a day" because Iran would be freed of its obligations under the deal.

"We will see what happens pretty soon", said Trump, who must announce his decision on whether to certify Iran's compliance by the end of the week. Representative Ed Royce, Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the Trump administration should preserve the deal to protect USA national security, even though he opposed the deal at the time.

But decertification does not mean tearing up the agreement, nor will it necessarily allow the U.S.to renegotiate it, both of which Trump pledged to do as a candidate. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., would demand that the intelligence community produce judgments on a wide range of Iranian behavior that is not covered by the nuclear deal, including ballistic missile testing and development and threats to Israel and the Mideast more broadly. The requirement for certification that Iran is complying with the deal came out of the dissatisfaction by Republicans over the Obama administration's agreement.

It also would indicate that the United States would be willing to renegotiate agreements with every new administration, giving other countries reason to hesitate on negotiations if they felt future leadership would give them a better deal, Mogherini added.

Several diplomats have said Europe would be ready to discuss sanctioning Iran's ballistic missile tests and forming a strategy to curb Iran's influence in the region. He would not say whether he would be open to other changes, stressing new conditions might violate the deal.

Rep. Elliot Engel, N.Y., the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he would consider modifying the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act so the president certifies Iran's compliance less frequently than every 90 days now, or using different standards.

As Common Dreams reported Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned that new sanctions or any other violation of the nuclear accord would effectively kill the deal and earn the USA condemnation from "the entire world". Engel, the top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, said unwinding the agreement would send a unsafe signal to allies and adversaries alike. Under the deal, which started being implemented in January 2016, Iran undertakes to limit its nuclear activities and allow transparent global control of its nuclear program. The middle ground that these options supposedly represent is an illusion - their sole goal is to ensure that President Trump never withdraws from an agreement he has correctly called an embarrassment to the United States. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley have said the U.S. interprets the agreement differently than the other countries involved.
