Washington Post Says Google Finds 'Russia-Paid Ads', Tech Giant Doesn't Confirm

Google uncovers evidence of Russian interference ahead of 2016 US election

There is a chance that Google may find other ads from Russian-linked accounts, the person familiar with the investigation said. When Facebook revealed the extent of its problem, it talked about $100,000 in ad buys from almost 500 affiliated accounts "likely operated out of Russia". On November 1, executives from Google, Facebook and Twitter are expected to appear before both the House and Senate intelligence committees to detail about the Russian efforts to use their platforms for spreading anti-national propaganda.

Google has not said whether it will testify. The number of times the ads were seen or clicked on across Google isn't known. "But the themes are consistent across platforms: the desire to help Donald Trump, to hurt Hillary Clinton and the desire to set Americans against each other".

The sources added that the company ascertain whether this ad bought a "Troll" or some of them were paid from ordinary Russian accounts.

The links were discovered by analysing Twitter data, reports the Post.

The company did not immediately comment on the claims.

Google said it found that Russians and other operatives working in concert with them, spent thousands of dollars to spread fake news and misinformation using its platforms including YouTube, Google Search, Gmail and DoubleClick, its advertising network. YouTube, which Google owns, is the largest online video service in the world.

USA security and election experts believe the revelation by Google may just be the beginning as the Silicon Valley giant looks deeper into its data and uncover other ways Russian Federation may have infiltrated its different platforms. Google has yet to confirm whether it will also give evidence at the hearing. Others were about the United States immigration policy, an apparent attempt to promote division among the American people.

It's not just Facebook and Twitter.

In late September, Zuckerberg used his Facebook Live feature to outline steps the company is taking to make its platform less vulnerable to political issues like selling ads to foreign operatives looking to influence USA elections.

Questioned by AFP, a spokesman for Google merely to indicate that the group "had a series of very strict rules in terms of sponsored content, including limits on the targeting of political content sponsored and the prohibition to target content according to the race and the religion".
