NBA Announces Changes to All-Star Game: No More East vs. West

NEW ORLEANS LA- FEBRUARY 18 Russell Westbrook #0 of the Oklahoma City Thunder reacts with James Harden #13 of the Houston Rockets during practice for the 2017 NBA All Star Game at the Mercedes Benz Superdome

Under the revamped format, two captains will draft the 2018 All-Star teams from the pool of players voted as starters and reserves, making selections without regard for conference affiliation.

NBA's new All-Star format drops East vs. "We're looking forward to putting on an entertaining show in L.A".

The NBA All-Star game would be a laughing stock if anybody actually watched it.

The conference does matter when it comes to the team's captain, who will be the highest vote-getter from the East and West. So, that's what we've done, inserting Kevin Durant (picked by Jamie) and LeBron James (picked by Robby) as team captains, and alternating picks until we'd run through the entire 2017 All-Star squads to shuffle them around.

It was not immediately clear when captains would announce their picks for the new All-Star teams.

In other changes, the two All-Star teams will each select a Los Angeles-based charity that it will play for. Voting will be open from Christmas Day until hours before the release of the starters.

The process for selecting the 24 All-Stars will remain the same, with 12 players from each conference earning spots. The starters will be determined by 50 percent fan vote, 25 percent basketball media and 25 percent NBA head coach vote.

Of the 13 players on last year's East roster, including injury replacement Carmelo Anthony, four have changed conferences.

Back-to-backs per team have been reduced for the third consecutive season to just 14.9 back-to-backs per team this season, and the league has eliminated scenarios in which teams play four games in five days.

The trade deadline is February 8 - before the All-Star game instead of after so teams don't have to worry about disruptions to the roster following the All-Star break.
