Jumbo jet makes emergency landing after engine blowout

The Air France Airbus A380 suffered extensive damage of its number four engine

"The passengers are now being assisted by teams dispatched to the location".

Air France said the flight's crew made the decision to divert the plane and said the pilots and crew handled the situation "perfectly".

The incident is the most severe since Qantas in 2010 grounded all six of its A380 aircraft after an inflight explosion on one of the plane's engines.

About four or five hours into flight AF66 from Paris to Los Angeles, there was a loud pop and the plane dropped, passenger Sarah Eamigh told HuffPost Canada in an interview.

Audio of the Air France "super mayday" after one of its engines blew over the Atlantic Ocean has been released.

Air France has not commented on the cause of engine failure.

Despite losing one of its 70,000 lb thrust engine, the redundancy of the other three engine enabled a safe landing of the aircraft, which was carrying 497 passengers. The aircraft landed safely. The airline was exploring options to get the passengers to the United States.

The engine manufacturer for the Airbus A380, Engine Alliance, said that the company would look into the matter.

Passengers have told of their terror after a plane's engine seemingly fell to pieces midair. According to first testimonies of passengers collected by the public tv, canadian CBC, a detonation was heard, followed by a stall of the aircraft, the crew quickly mastered.

"We've been sitting on this plane since this morning waiting to take off".

"A lot of very scared people on the plane".
