Toddler shoots playmates at MI daycare

Two toddlers left in a critical condition after being accidentally shot by a playmate at daycare center in Michigan

A toddler is accused of pulling the trigger, wounding two children at a home daycare center in Dearborn, Michigan on Wednesday.

The injured children, both three years old, are in critical but stable conditions at a Detroit hospital.

'For the parents of the children that were left here, I can tell you that both our police and fire departments have done our very best to keep them safe and get them to a safe place.

The police chief said the gun was kept in the Dearborn home, and several other children were in the home at the time. If one to seven children - who are not related to the adult caretaker - receive care for a month or more per year, and if the caretaker brings in more than $600 annually from this babysitting, the law states the home must be registered.

"My hope is he grows up and can forget what happened and what he witnessed", his grandmother said.

The shooting happened Wednesday morning around 10 a.m.in the 3000 block of Harding Street. Her husband, Tim, reportedly is a hunter, and police were seen taking gun cases out of the house.

Eubanks has six children of her own, and Escobedo - whose kids sometimes stay at the house - said the cousins think of each other as brothers and sisters.

"It's awful. You see those kids outside all the time and it makes you wonder: how that could happen?"

"Obviously, there was a weapon in proximity to the kids, and that's totally unacceptable to me, but I don't want to comment any further on that", Police Chief Ron Haddad said.

Haddad said he was proud of the way the city's first responders handled the situation.

She said she was "shocked" to hear about the incident because her sister bars guns in the home.
