Ryanair extends flight cancellations to early 2018

Ryanair's Friday deadline to handle flights compensation looms

The CAA said it must have the draft text of this email - which must contain "accurate and comprehensive information on their rights and options" - from the airline by 5:00 p.m. Monday.

The regulator's chief executive Andrew Haines had previously said he was furious with the carrier, after it cancelled an extra 18,000 flights in a move that would affect 400,000 people.

Sky News said the CAA has the right to take legal action on behalf of customers but not to suspend Ryanair's licence to operate.

The CAA also formally requested that Ryanair help rebook passengers who did not choose the best option for themselves because they had been denied information.

The authority has also instructed the airline to publicly state whether it will reimburse expenses for affected passengers.

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary last week sought to address the airline's problems with a first wave of 315,000 cancellations.

Ryanair cancelled up to 50 flights a day through to the end of October, affecting 315,000 passengers.

"If they follow through on what they are saying, then they would be breaking the law".

Less than an hour before the Friday deadline set by the UK Civil Aviation Authority to tell those affected passengers that they were entitled to be re-routed via other airlines, Ryanair finally caved into the demands.

Andrew Haines, chief executive of the CAA, commented: "There are clear laws in place, which are meant to assist passengers in the event of a cancellation. It's only when we get to steps of court action very often that they are prepared to comply with the law", the CAA's Haines said.

Ryanair has not consistently informed passengers they have a right to ask for a flight on another airline.

He added that 99 per cent of Ryanair's customers remain unaffected by the cancellations. The main reason is to reduce the "risk of further cancellations", which will be eliminated after the airline suspended 2,100 flights during six weeks due to a failure distributing "pilot vacations".
