McCain 'never had any intention' of backing latest health care bill

Gov. Susana Martinez

Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, said Friday that he would not support the latest Republican effort to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, dealing a major and potentially decisive blow to the last-ditch attempt to fulfill a seven-year GOP promise.

Of McCain, Trump said, "John McCain never had any intention of voting for this Bill, which his Governor loves".

The president followed up on the criticism via Twitter on Saturday morning. He campaigned on Repeal & Replace.

Provisions shoehorned into the Republican health care bill dangle extra money for Alaska and Wisconsin, home states of one GOP senator whose vote party leaders desperately need and another who co-sponsored the legislation, according to analysts who've studied the legislation. Senator Tom Carper of DE is a Democrat.

That McCain is well enough to play this central figure in the Republican health care efforts is a surprise to many given the gravity of his diagnosis. When McCain's children and some colleagues flocked to his Arizona ranch this summer, the mood was upbeat and the senator often joined his guests for hikes. Thanks for being with us.

McCain was the third and deciding "no" vote against the Republican repeal and replace effort in the summer, delivering a dramatic thumbs-down on the floor of the Senate just days after returning to Washington after a diagnosis of brain cancer. One Senate official told me exactly that a few weeks ago. We serve together in Homeland Security Committee. He says, "I'm a big boy". Senate Republicans have only until the end of September to pass a healthcare bill with a simple majority as a budget reconciliation bill. "I'm just trying to do what I believe is the right thing for the people of Maine". "We continue to work with the authors on it through this weekend", Price said. Somebody has a good idea. In the event of a 50-50 vote, Vice President Mike Pence would cast the deciding vote.

"Medicaid literally is a lifeline and saves lives", Cantwell, a Democrat, said Friday at International Community Health Services' Holly Park Clinic, a low-income clinic in south Seattle where 60 percent of patients get care through Medicaid.

SIMON: Yeah. So you believe bipartisan support is necessary to put health care into place for millions of Americans and not have it undone from administration to administration? Do you guys, on your side of the aisle, have your own arguments ahead about standing by Obamacare or campaigning for some kind of single-payer system?

"I think it is more significantly uphill to get there, but it's definitely not impossible to get there", he added. I was - as governor of DE for eight years - I was very much involved in the National Governors Association.

That "throws the door wide open" for states to let insurers vary their rates as they see fit, said Tim Jost, a professor emeritus at the Washington and Lee University School of Law. "I feel like I've done my very best to layout what happened so that it doesn't happen again". "The problem I have with the Graham-Cassidy piece is that it assumes the cost of health care across the country should be the same everywhere".
