Iranian state media: Test of ballistic missile successful

DS
FIREPOWER Iran has been repeatedly slammed by the US for developing nuclear weapons

State broadcaster IRIB carried footage of the missile test without giving its time and location.

Iran says it has successfully tested a new ballistic missile despite warnings from Washington that it was ready to ditch a landmark nuclear deal over the issue. "We can not allow it to happen.", Liberman said.

Iran unveiled its latest ballistic missile dubbed "Khoramshahr" during a military parade in Tehran on Friday.

At Friday's military parade, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hit out at those who "create problems for the peoples of our region every day and boast of selling arms to the bloodthirsty Zionist regime [Israel], which has been attacking the peoples of our region for 70 years like a cancerous tumor".

The United States says Tehran's ballistic missile tests violated a U.N. resolution that endorsed the nuclear deal.

According to reports, the missile has a range of 2,000 kilometers and can carry several warheads.

That makes them only medium-range, which is still sufficient to reach Israel or U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf.

This was due to what was termed as a violation of the spirit of the 2015 agreement between Iran and six world powers to limit its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.

Israel's Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Saturday denounced Iran's testing of a medium-range missile as a "provocation" and said it was proof of Tehran's ambition to become a world power.

The most recent achievements of the Iranian armed forces in the missile industry, equipment for the ground, naval and air defense forces as well as communications gear were displayed in the events.

At the United Nations on Tuesday, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu harshly condemned the Iran nuclear deal, warning that the accord will pave the way for Iran to obtain nuclear weapons if it is not scrapped or altered.

On Wednesday, Rouhani spoke during the 2017 gathering of the UN General Assembly.

His comments came just days after President Trump delivered a speech at the United Nations in which he accused Iran of exporting violence to Yemen, Syria, and other parts of the Middle East.

Iran maintains that testing non-nuclear ballistic missiles is not a violation of the JCPOA. "We will strengthen our missile capabilities. We will not seek permission from anyone to defend our country".

Global experts are nearly unanimous in their opinion that Iran is abiding by the pact that saw Tehran agree to limit its nuclear program, which the West believed was aimed at developing weapons, in exchange for the easing of worldwide economic sanctions.
