I students react to BYU decision to sell caffeinated sodas

The Provo school announced it was making the change Thursday after receiving more requests from students to serve caffeinated soda. Brigham Young will still not sell coffee or highly caffeinated energy drinks.

Move over, caffeine-free soft drinks: Your caffeinated counterparts are now available at a prominent Mormon university.

"The Church's health guidelines prohibit alcoholic drinks, smoking or chewing of tobacco, and hot drinks - taught by Church leaders to refer specifically to tea and coffee", it said.

At the time of the church announcement in 2012, Jenkins said the school didn't sell caffeinated drinks because there had not "been a demand for it". The faith's health code, known as the Word of Wisdom, specifically forbids coffee, tea, tobacco, alcohol and "any other drinks or food containing harmful substances", according to the Church's official site, but whether the more ambiguous category includes anything caffeinated has always been a source of debate. Caffeinated Coke products will be available through soda fountains and at vending machines across campus. "I never thought I would see the day so it's exciting".

Bottled-water consumption in the US hit 39.3 gallons per capita a year ago, while carbonated soft drinks fell to 38.5 gallons, marking the first time that soda was knocked off the top spot, according to data from industry tracker Beverage Marketing Corp.

"Did I just buy the first-ever caffeinated Coke Zero Sugar sold in #BYU's Wilkinson Student Center?" he tweeted.

Consumer preferences have changed, she said. In a Facebook post, Caffeine Corner said, "Sounds like we're still in business".

Anderson and other underground market customers shared their reactions to Thursday's news on social media, some disclosed bittersweet memories while others pointed out that the ban's end is not that big of a deal for students who took advantage of the connects.
