ME not targeted by election hackers, officials confirm

Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman

Colorado may have been among almost two dozen states whose election systems were scanned for weaknesses by Russian-linked actors surrounding the 2016 election, the Colorado Secretary of State's Office said Friday, though officials feel strongly that there was no breach.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security notified election officials in 21 states that hackers targeted their systems previous year.

Dean says both DHS and state cyber security experts say the attempt by Russian actors was a common form of surveillance scan looking for vulnerabilities in the state computer network.

CT officials were notified by the federal government on Friday that the state's online voter registration system was targeted during last year's presidential campaign in hacking efforts by Russian Federation.

Wisconsin was one of 21 states notified Friday of the attempted hacking. DHS did not directly notify chief election officials of their states' status until Friday, according to a news release from the Maine Department of the Secretary of State.

The new dollars, approved unanimously by the Joint Budget Committee, will cover the cost to add a centralized risk management platform to protect and monitor who accesses the state's voter registration system, as well as upgrade the exciting firewalls to allow real-time threat intelligence. After his win, Trump created a commission headed by Vice President Mike Pence to investigate voter fraud nationwide. Wisconsin has not yet responded to those questions or turned over the publicly available voter data because Trump's commission hasn't paid the required $12,500 fee.

A draft is expected to be done in December with a final plan to be done in early 2018. One local security breach where a key password is divulged could cause problems statewide, Haas said.

The secretary of state's office alerted the FBI and Wyman said her office continues to work with federal officials.
