Tesla, AMD May Be Teaming Up to Build Autopilot Chip for Cars

Tesla is Developing Their Own Self Driving AI Chip with AMD

AMD shares closed up 62 cents, or nearly 5%, at $13.74, following CNBC's headline, and are up another 87 cents, over 6%, at $14.62, in late trading. He views the new chip as a move to address specific computing tasks for the vehicle while an Nvidia chip would still handle general objective computing.

As Tesla pushes towards its goal of building a self-driving auto, it has emerged that the on-board artificial intelligence chip is being built upon AMD intellectual property, this is according to a source close to the project. According to a source familiar with the matter, Tesla has already received its first batch of samples and has already begun doing test runs.

Yesterday, Sanjay Jha, CEO of AMD spin-off and chip fabricator GlobalFoundries, at the company's technology conference in Santa Clara, California, mentioned Tesla as an example of companies that were working with fabricators.

The CNBC report said that its sources tied AMD and Tesla together, but neither AMD or Tesla will comment on the situation.

According to commentators, a more power-efficient purpose-built chip could help development of totally autonomous driving. GlobalFoundries manufacturers these chips and has a wafer supply agreement with AMD until 2020. The 7nm-based Navi is scheduled to launch in 2019, the same year Musk promised to deliver Tesla's first-ever autonomous vehicle with self-driving capabilities.

Analysts are increasingly more bullish on AMD's technology and potential in the critical artificial intelligence market following the news Tesla is using the company's intellectual property. Keller previously worked at AMD and Apple, particularly on the latter's A4 and A5 chips. Tesla has brought on several AMD veterans after hiring Keller, including director Ganesh Venkataramanan, principal hardware engineer Bill McGee and system circuit design lead Dan Bailey. As it seems now, they have partnered up with AMD to do so.
