Report Zapad Attack Helicopters Fire On Journalists, Two Seriously Injured

Iskander-M missile hits target in Kazakhstan at Zapad-2017 drills

It said the accident happened Sunday or Monday, and that the video was provided by an unidentified witness.

Fontanka.ru said the incident occurred on September 18 and left one person with concussion.

A separate report, however, suggested there were three people injured, who were not civilians.

The Zapad-2017 is, most of the times, organized in Belarus, in the ultra-militarized enclave of Kaliningrad and in several regions of northwestern Russian Federation.

Footage has emerged of a Russian helicopter accidentally firing a rocket into a group of onlookers during a military exercise.

. "They activated the weapon chain, but something malfunctioned, and rockets went down [earlier]", the source told 66.ru and added that two people - "most likely journalists" - were hospitalised with serious injuries.

Russia's government has denied it occurred during President Vladimir Putin's visit to the war games on Monday.

Russian forces are collaborating with Belarusian troops in the war games, which simulate a scenario where a hostile "Western Coalition" seeks to overthrow the Belarus government and split it away from Russia. As the helicopters near, rockets suddenly fly from one of them towards the man, exploding and throwing debris over the camera.

According to the Russians, the helicopter's automated targeting system locked onto the truck by mistake and fired the missile. One of the helicopters fired several rockets that appeared to hit a vehicle close to the spectators. A local St. Petersburg news website, Fontanka.ru also cited sources who said it happened at Luzhsky.

Moscow has insisted that the exercises, which are held every four years, would rehearse a strictly defensive scenario and involve no more than 12,700 troops, just below the level that would require Russian Federation to allow North Atlantic Treaty Organisation observers under an global agreement.
