Julia Louis-Dreyfus Sets Emmys Record With Sixth Consecutive Win for Veep

With his win for This is Us, Sterling K. Brown is the first black actor to win the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series since Andre Braugher in 1998, while Riz Ahmed's win for The Night Of makes him the first Asian man to win an acting Emmy ever.

This is Louis-Dreyfus's seventh win in the category and her eighth Primetime Emmy overall.

Northwestern and Evanston were highlighted at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards - NU alumna Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Communication '83) took home her sixth award for the HBO comedy "Veep", and Evanston Township High School alumna Lena Waithe scored for her work in the Netflix comedy "Master of None".

"This is, and continues to be, the role of a lifetime, and an adventure of utter, utter joy", she said during her acceptance speech.

The actor's impersonations of Trump have propelled "SNL" to its best season in years, bringing in viewers and also Emmy glory. "He's the reason I'm probably up here", Glover said, acknowledging the entertainment industry's and the Emmys' tilt toward the political under President Donald Trump.

"We did have a whole storyline about an impeachment but we abandoned that because we were anxious someone else might get to it first", Dreyfus said.

For his win for his portrayal of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, Alec Baldwin is the first actor from a variety show to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy since Tom Poston on the Steve Allen Show in 1959.

Hosted by Stephen Colbert, the Emmys telecast surprised many in the crowd with a cameo appearance by former White House press secretary Sean Spicer.


She teared up as she gave her thanks Sunday night. The series also took awards for best drama writing and directing. From 1996-1999 she won lead actress in a comedy for "Mad About You".

She made history for winning the most Emmys for the same role.

The 56-year-old actress won Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for the the sixth consecutive year en route to tying a record for most acting awards ever. "It is a complicated, insidious disease".

Julia Louis-Dreyfus had a lot of competition in the category.

"This will be the largest audience to witness the Emmys, period, both in person and around the world", Spicer said.

And Charlie Brooker picked up two Emmys for the Black Mirror episode San Junipero - for writing and for best TV movie.

Trump loomed over the ceremony as the target of multiple jokes.
