Google systematically pays women less than men: Lawsuit

Credit Bloomberg News

A trio of former Google employees filed a lawsuit against the tech giant on Thursday that alleges that the company systematically paid women less for the same work and denied them opportunities for advancement, the Guardian reported.

The plaintiffs are a former Google software engineer, a former communications specialist and a former manager who worked in various roles at the Mountain View, California-based company.

Google is fighting with the Labor Department of the United States, for the discrimination as the female employees in the company, who are now holding the technology jobs are just 20 percent and for the global workforce they only 31 percent.

James Finberg, the attorney, who is representing these plaintiffs, believes that this lawsuit will be able to gain the class action status and will, indeed, cover all the female employees that have worked with Google and faced such disparities. "Google has said its own our analysis of its employees" compensation indicated it had no gender pay gap. Combined, these factors are said to limit women's ability to move up the corporate ladder at Google, or even simply to receive the same level of compensation as their male counterparts.

The lawsuit filed against Google states that women were forced into less prestigious jobs despite qualifications.

Google said in an email that "job levels and promotions are determined through rigorous hiring and promotion committees" and that it has checks in place to guard against gender bias.

The lawsuit also follows the release of a memo written by a Google engineer who claimed on the internal document that, among other things, women were not biologically suitable for work in the technology industry and decried Google's efforts to level the playing field.

In her case, when Ellis arrived at Google with four years experience, she was kept in an entry-level job for four years and was denied promotions.

Google said it would review the lawsuit in detail, but disagrees with the allegations at the centre of it.

The women argue that the company violated California laws requiring equal pay for similar work and prohibiting unfair and unlawful business practices.

Just this week, the fortunes of financial tech company Social Finance, known as SoFi, also fell into disarray after multiple news reports described the firm as a "toxic" workplace riddled with sexual improproprities, harassment, and discrimination.
