Customers urged to check financial records after Equifax breach

Equifax Error Message

Credit rating agency Equifax has confirmed that hackers exploited a vulnerability in the Apache Struts 2 web application framework to steal sensitive information on as many as 143 million of its customers.

As more information becomes available about the Equifax data breach, many consumers have questions relating to how it affects them - and their credit - personally.

So almost half of American's personal data is now in the hands of criminals, "What we've seen here is the most outrageous, the most egregious example of a company not doing what it needs to do when it comes to protecting consumer information", said Maura Healey, Massachusetts Attorney General. Equifax, which says it learned of the breach in late July, said credit card numbers for about 209,000 people and certain documents for another 182,000 were also accessed. Typically, when data breaches happen hackers wait a while until they start making transactions with your information.

First check the Equifax website to see if your personal information has been compromised.

Place a fraud alert or security freeze on your credit report and obtain a copy - Contact one of the three credit reporting bureaus to notify them that you may be a victim of identity theft and would like to place a fraud alert on your credit.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says her office has been getting a lot of calls about the Equifax data breach and has some advice for consumers. To be effective, a freeze must be set up with all three credit bureaus - Equifax, Transunion, and Experian. If you come across any accounts or collection items that you do not recognize, contact the credit reporting agencies to dispute the matter and get it resolved. While not foolproof, credit freeze is the best way to prevent lenders from having access to your credit report and thieves from opening new lines of credit in your name.

Experts said if you have been impacted by identity theft, you need to close any accounts that have been tampered with immediately.

Equifax created a website that allows you check. Everyone keeps asking me if they should put a freeze on their credit.

Filer says you can also look into identity theft protection.

Equifax backed down. You can now get credit monitoring without waiving your right to sue.
