North Korea expert: 'No way to stop' Kim Jong Un's regime

Kim Jong-un inspects a nuclear warhead

The United States will not give up on using diplomacy to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, the State Department said Wednesday.

Earlier this month, South Korea's defense minister suggested it was worth reviewing the redeployment of US tactical nuclear weapons on the peninsula in order to deter threats from the North, something conservative US Sen.

Prior to the test, North Korean state media released images of the warhead it intends to mount on its new Hwasong-14 intercontinental ballistic missile. "If it proves it can live in peace, the world will live in peace with it", she said.

Juche is the North's ruling ideology that mixes Marxism and an extreme form of go-it-alone nationalism preached by state founder Kim Il Sung, the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un. Some conservative politicians even say that the South needs to develop its own nuclear weapons.

North Korea said it successfully conducted its sixth nuclear test on September 3.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has dismissed the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons in his country, warning it could "lead to a nuclear arms race in northeast Asia".

In 1993, the Council approved Resolution 825 calling on North Korea to remain in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

A few hundred North Koreans now work in the European Union, many of them in Poland.

According to 38 North, satellite images suggested the nuke test resulted in landslides occurring at the Punggye-ri test site.

"If fully enforced I think that the amount of hard currency that North Korea would lose would be enough to certainly concern that leadership, because they don't have very much hard currency and this will cause significant problems for them", said David Straub, a North Korea analyst with the Sejong Institute.

The interview took place ahead of a trip by Moon to the United Nations trip next week.

Next week, Moon will travel to NY for the United Nations General Assembly.

"A conflict in North Korea will not only be extremely destabilizing in the region, but it could potentially lead to a third world war due to the U.S. security guarantee that could internationalize the conflict overnight" explained the expert from Citi during a "Street Signs" debate held in Singapore at the Milken Institute Asia Summit. The speech is expected to set the tone of his policy shift toward the North.

Moon will also deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly. In July, Moon made public in Berlin his desire to engage the North and proposed inter-Korean dialogue, efforts ignored by Pyongyang.
