Monster flap: Racism banner unfurled at Fenway Park

As we wrote last night, during the fourth inning of Wednesday night's game between the Athletics and Red Sox, some people sitting behind the Green Monster at Fenway Park unfurled a black banner with white text that read, "Racism is as American as Baseball".

Covering part of the Foxwoods logo on the outfield wall, the banner was up for about one batter before security removed it along with the fans from the stands, while some boos could be heard from the crowd. In his Facebook post, he also wrote the game was not delayed.

Sam Kennedy, the Red Sox president, made a public apology to Jones and said: "No player should have an object thrown at him on the playing field, nor be subjected to any kind of racism at Fenway Park".

The thoughts behind those who brought the banner are unknown-whether they were trying to make a political statement or simply trying to voice their opinion will likely be revealed in time.

CSNNE's Evan Drellich spoke to a protester who said there were five people involved from several activist groups: three held the banner in place, one documented the protest from up close and another documented from far away. Not just a sport for white, male populations who refuse to acknowledge that Black Lives Matter.

Though the sign was only visible for two minutes, it sparked a debate on social media, per the Boston Herald, including about what it actually meant, with some believing it was created to promote racism.

Fenway Park has a long history of racism, with opposing players hearing racial slurs shouted from the crowd, so the protesters picked a flawless spot to deliver their message loud and clear. And I know we have a policy that you can't affix a banner from anywhere in the ballpark.

Baltimore's Adam Jones said he was a victim of racial slurs when he played at Fenway Park in May.

Racism is still ingrained in the American society, it seems.
