Cardinals RB David Johnson to undergo wrist surgery

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson walks off the field with medical staff for X-rays during an NFL football game against the Detroit Lions in Detroit Sunday Sept. 10 2017

The Arizona Cardinals got the worst news they could have gotten with the wrist injury running back David Johnson suffered.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Johnson is expected to be out two to three months following surgery on his wrist.

National Football League teams are now allowed to bring two players back from IR in 2017, but players must sit out six weeks before returning to practice and eight weeks before returning to games.

Johnson left Sunday's loss in Detroit in the third quarter to receive medical attention.

Chris Johnson will likely get most of the carries against the Colts on Sunday in Indianapolis, followed by Kerwynn Williams, Andre Ellington, Elijhaa Penny and D.J.

While he didn't give a timetable for Johnson, Arians says Logan is expected to be sidelined eight to 12 weeks.

The earliest Johnson can return this season is during the eighth week.

Johnson's versatility as both a runner and receiver allowed the Cardinals to build their offence around him.

Losing Johnson is a huge blow for the Cardinals, but Arians is confident his other running backs are ready to step up and pick up the slack.

Johnson will undergo an MRI on Monday, and the results of that test will determine how much time he will miss.

Johnson was hurt while making a 24-yard reception. Foster played in three games for the Patriots in 2016 and had six carries for 23 yards. But he did average 4.2 yards per carry for Arizona in 2015, and there's comfort in familiarity I suppose.

We will update this post when official word of Johnson's status comes, but for now it sounds as though the star back will miss significant time this season.
