Red Cross Offering Expedited Disaster Training

Curtis Compton The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

8News teamed up with the American Red Cross to raise almost $25,000 for the victims of both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. You can register for the training sessions here.

"It was 14 days, long hours".

Walk-ins will be accepted at first-come, first served.

The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) will donate $10,000 to the American Red Cross to help Florida recover from the damage caused by Hurricane Irma. Now 12 volunteers are working the Harvey response; 7 have deployed to Irma. Red Cross was given a mission and stepped up with a response 3x what the state was asking for. "I want to encourage anyone interested in responding to disasters to visit Redcross.org and sign up to volunteer", said Stacy Burks, Chapter Executive Director. "The most effective way we can help is by investing in organizations involved in disaster relief year-round".

Whether it's Georgia, Florida, or Texas-they're ready to help in any way they can. Unfortunately, collecting and sending food, clothing and other household items often does more harm than good. "So it's important for them to be flexible and I think they have that spirit as they can be asked to do various things to support the disaster operations there in the community".

"My number one and only goal is to make it better for somebody", she said.

Martin also questioned why the Red Cross (or the "Red Loss" as he calls it) appears to be taking credit for relief efforts in Houston, when local government has been doing most of the work.

Because of some very generous donors, these monetary donations will allow the American Red Cross to help people take care of emergency needs.

The Red Cross honors donor intent.
