U.S. steps up Qatar crisis diplomacy, lauds Kuwait's mediation

US President Donald Trump and Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al Ahmad al-Jaber al Sabah hold a joint press conference at the White House in Washington DC on September 7 2017

The visit by Kuwait's Emir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad to Washington is "historic both in the timing and the level of the accompanying delegation" and comes at a "very delicate time due to the challenges and crises in the Arab region", the Kuwaiti ambassador to the USA has said.

"The press has been incredible", Trump reportedly told House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi during a phone call on Thursday morning.

Donald Trump appeared to enjoy his recent visit with Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, calling him a "good partner" and a "very special person".

In a statement issued early Friday, Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates say "any dialogue on meeting their demands should not be preceded by any prior conditions".

The White House released its readout of the call after Qatar's ambassador to the USA said the country would donate $30 million to help Texans recover from Harvey.

Kuwait Emir to hold talks with Trump

"I think it's something that's going to get solved fairly easily", he said. He applauded Kuwait's "critical contributions to regional stability" but also repeated an offer to mediate himself, particularly between Qatar and Saudi Arabia and the UAE. And he suggested he could help strike a quick deal.

"The key thing is whether Trump stands on this [GCC crisis]". Then, he instructed Tillerson to support Kuwait's mediation, shuttling between the parties in July. But the dispute has dragged on.

President Donald J. Trump will welcome Amir Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah of Kuwait to the White House for an official working visit on September 7, 2017. He noted that Qatar had been presented with a list of 13 demands by the other countries and was willing to discuss them.

During a joint press conference, Trump confirmed that the crisis began over several countries supporting the funding of terrorism over the years. Qatar hosts a USA military base critical to the anti-IS fight in Iraq and Syria.

Saudi Arabia and its allies accuse Qatar, the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, of ties to Iran and to terrorist groups.
