They've been warned: Some insist on riding out Irma at home

This image taken from video shows CNN's Chris Cuomo during his afternoon coverage of Hurricane Irma in Naples Fla. on Sunday Sept. 10 2017. Journalists were the shock troops allowing the nation to experience the storm from the comfort of their living

It wasn't immediately clear whether the collapse caused any injuries.

Two other cranes toppled earlier in Miami as Irma swirled up the state. "In the future there should be an easy way to bring them down in events like this one".

The National Hurricane Center says Category 4 Hurricane Irma is now "headed for the southwest Florida coast" as winds continue to pick up speed in all of South Florida. Here in Miami, our Alex Perez was with one of those crews securing one of those massive cranes. As the city of Miami said in its news release about the risk, "The crane's arm has to remain loose; it is not tied down".

The first crane fell in a bay-front area filled with hotels and highrise condo and office buildings, near the AmericanAirlines Arena, where the NBA's Miami Heat play.

There are two dozen such cranes looming over the high-rise city. Maurice Pons, deputy director of the city's building department, said in a statement then that he "would not advise" riding out the storm near one of the cranes.

The National Hurricane Centre said Irma's winds were at 177 km/h, just below major hurricane status, as the centre of the still risky and wide storm moved farther inland late today.

Toronto-Dominion Bank is closing all 81 of its branches in South Florida in preparation for the arrival of hurricane Irma. Although Miami will miss the worst of Irma's top winds of 130 miles per hour, the Miami has seen gusts of up to 100 miles per hour.

After the collapse, the boom was partly dangling on the side of the building, attached to the crane tower by a cable, photos on Twitter showed.

Many questioned why the cranes weren't moved before the storm.

Reporting on the dangers posed by Irma's powerful winds when they reach Florida, NPR's David Schaper spoke to Northwestern University civil engineering professor Joseph Schofer.

Tower cranes are hundreds of feet tall, and their counterbalances can weigh as much as 30,000 pounds.
