Nine suspected terrorists killed in shootout in Egypt

The attacks, mainly targeting police and the military, increased after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by the army following protests against his rule.

The assailants, whose identities were not yet known, later opened fire at survivors and commandeered a police pickup truck.

The statement added that the IS militants fled from North Sinai to Cairo to hide and prepare to carry out terrorist attacks in Greater Cairo.

At least 26 Egyptian soldiers were killed or wounded on July 7, 2017, in attacks on checkpoints in the Sinai Peninsula. Militants detonated an Improvised Explosive Device, destroying three armoured vehicles and a signal-jamming vehicle. The wounded included a police brigadier general.

No group has claimed responsibility for Monday's attack, while the Egyptian authorities have yet to comment on the incident.

The attack took place about 30 kilometers (20 miles) west of el-Arish in northern Sinai, the epicenter of a long-running insurgency by militants now led by the Daesh terrorist group. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief media.

According to the state news agency MENA, security forces entered a gun battle with militants in the vicinity of the blast site and managed to slay several of them. According to the military, thousands of militants have been killed in the operations held against them.

Five policemen, including three officers, were also injured in the shootout, he said.

Today's attack came a day after Egyptian security forces killed 10 terrorists during a raid at their hideouts in a densely populated central Cairo neighbourhood. They said the fighters had sneaked into the capital from northern Sinai but did not say whether they were members of ISIL.
